SQL 2008 and Opening DTS packages

I was trying to open DTS on a Windows 2008 Server running SQL 2008 only and got an error message:

SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer components are required to edit DTS packages. Install the special Web download, "SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer Components" to use this feature. (Microsoft.SqlServer.DtsObjectExplorerUI)

But, I did have them installed. I found a great post with some help on the subject. Be careful searching for the components on Microsoft downloads site as their search sent me to orginial RTM files. Latest SP3 versions found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=536FD7D5-013F-49BC-9FC7-77DEDE4BB075&displaylang=en

You will need SQLServer2005_DTS and SQLServer2005_BC or SQLServer2005_BC_x64. The key is updating the server PATH as Ramoji describes: Update the PATH environment variable in such a way that the path “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\” appears before the “C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\...” paths. On the server, the folder might be Program Files X(86) instead of Program Files.

On Windows 2008 click link labeled Advanced System Settings on System properties page. I found a duplicate PATH entry to PowerShell, so I removed my duplicated entry %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

Restart of SSMS is required. PATH update via Environment Variables change did not require a reboot. I don't seem to have DEP issues.
