Free Real-time Log Monitoring Tool

Microsoft has a free utility that can read log (text) files in real-time, it's called SMS Trace. 

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=61e4e21f-2652-42dd-a04d-b67f0573751d&DisplayLang=en to download SMS2003Toolkit2.exe.

Run SMS2003Toolkit2.exe and it will expand .msi installation file into its own folder. Run SMS2003Toolkit2.msi. Only option to change is the selection of components to install:

  • Common Tools = Run locally (default).
  • Server Tools = Select Do not install
  • Advanced Client Tools = Select Do not install
  • Legacy Client Tools = Select Do not install

Here is how to use it:

  1. Launch SMS Trace from Start, All Programs, SMS 2003 Toolkit 2, and then SMS Trace.
  2. On the SMS Trace dialog box click Yes.

Example usage on windows cluster log: On the SMS Trace menu select File, Open and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Cluster and click on C:\WINDOWS\Cluster\Cluster.log and then click Open. It has a nice highlighting search operation (along with real-time updating).
